Its mission is to develop resilient community conservancies that transform lives, secure peace and conserve natural resources. It is a non-government organization headquartered in LEWA Wildlife Conservancy, Meru County.

Job Description

Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust is a non-profit community conservancy under the Northern Rangelands Trust – an umbrella organisation that supports 35 member Community Conservancies across northern and coastal Kenya.

Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (RES), is Kenya’s first community owned rescue, rehabilitation and release sanctuary for orphaned and abandoned young elephants. In its first year of operation, awareness of Reteti’s unique position has garnered phenomenal support and as it continues to grow, its profile will keep increasing.

In order to manage and maintain RES’s brand reputation and communications needs, we are seeking to invite application from exceptional, passionate, self-motivated, and energetic graduate candidates for the position of Senior Communication Officer – Reteti Elephant Sanctuary The job holder will report to the CEO and will be part of the RES communications management team. The successful candidate will be based in Namunyak Conservancy. He or She will be responsible for managing all external and internal communications within RES, staying on top of communications needs and assisting in the development of materials to meet those needs; including fact sheets, donor reports/ proposals, social media content and presentations. They will be required to understand the community, liaising with county coordinators, programme leads and RES managers to conduct field reporting, or provide event support.

They will work with the Chief Executive Officer to manage RES social media accounts and other communications platforms

KEY TASKS:

  • Assist in implementing the RES communications strategy.
  • Oversee and proactively improve internal communications channels within RES, and between RES and member community conservancy.
  • Oversee and evolve the RES brand identity.
  • Assist in developing and implementing a social media strategy.
  • Work with RES team to develop effective publicity for all programmes.
  • Support the production of publicity materials, technical publications.
  • Manage the development and production of web and print-based materials.
  • Oversee the production of content for the website, social media and print.
  • Develop effective internal communications mechanisms to ensure that news and events are known internally and publicized externally as appropriate.
  • Manage all media, press and film crew visits.
  • Project manage film making and high profile international print media opportunities.
  • Manage the monitoring of media and current affairs in wildlife conservation and community conservation in Kenya and beyond.
  • Build on an existing network and develop new relationships with media, community conservancies, partner organisations and more.
  • Line-manage at least one Communications Officer to ensure that deadlines and quality thresholds are met.
  • Support RES Senior management and staff with requisite media and communications training.
  • Manage the day-to-day internal and external communications activities of RES by working to an agreed work-plan with clear and time dated deliverables.
  • Ensure that RES’s communication outputs are of the highest standard

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Knowledge/Technical Skills and Experience

  • Ensure that RES’s communication outputs are of the highest standard.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field and a minimum 4 years’ related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in online marketing and communication.
  • Experience writing, editing, and proofreading printed or online content for diverse audiences.
  • Experience using social media as a professional communications tool.
  • Experience working with conservancies, wildlife and international media.
  • Fluency in English and Swahili required, both verbal and written, a foreign language is added advantage.

H/she will report to the Chief Executive Officer, Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. The overall responsibilities of the Sanctuary Manager is to coordinate and supervise the daily management and effective running of Reteti Elephant Sanctuary which is within Namunyak Conservancy.

KEY TASKS:

  • Support the CEO to ensure appropriate systems and resources
  • General oversight of the daily operations of the sanctuary, maintenance, stores control, community engagement, maintenance of health standards and logistics.
  • Oversee, and manage the care for the animals, protection and other wildlife
  • Administration of finance, reporting, salaries, accounting and statutory compliance.
  • Oversight of Community liaison office, grazing and water management.
  • Management of supplies and procurement.
  • Maintenance of records, inventory control and storekeeping.
  • Guest visitation, ticketing and fees collection.
  • Managing donor funding, budgets and expenditures

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Knowledge/Technical Skills and Experience

  • Hold an undergraduate degree in wildlife management or a relevant field.
  • Must have a minimum of at least 5 years relevant experience.
  • Computer literacy
  • Good presentation skills.
  • Willingness to work and reside at the Sanctuary in Reteti.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication (English and Kiswahili).
  • Preferably have some knowledge of the challenges, sensitivities and strengths of community conservation in Kenya.

Reporting to the NWCT Board the CEO of Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is responsible for overseeing the sanctuary’s consistent achievement of its vision, mission and core values. The CEO will be responsible for both strategic and operational support to the sanctuary. They will be responsible for managing the rescue program and developing it to a self-sustaining model that integrates wildlife conservation, environmental conservation, tourism and livestock; benefits the surrounding communities; protects the ecological integrity of the land and contributes to improvement of the community livelihoods. This position involves a lot of overseas travelling.

KEY TASKS:

  • Develop and maintain sound financial practices including the preparation of budgets, financial report etc.
  • Develop, refine and implement the Sanctuary strategic plans
  • Communicate and align the sanctuary and conservancies strategies, plans and developments.
  • Identify partners and fund raise resources towards the sanctuary.
  • Oversee effective implementation of care for the animals, protect and wildlife
  • Ensure compliance of all the Laws, regulations, polices and guidelines.
  • Develop sustainable programs for the sanctuary.
  • Create good working relationships with all the stakeholders (community, stakeholders, county government, KWS and the donor community.
  • Help to improve awareness and understanding of wildlife values and conservation benefits within constituent communities.
  • Facilitate communication and feedback between the conservancy and the broader community.
  • Assist as necessary in managing donor budgets and expenditure.
  • Perform any other duties delegated from time to time by the Board.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Knowledge/Technical Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or its equivalent.
  • At least 5 years’ work experience in a management position.
  • In-depth knowledge and demonstrated commitment to wildlife conservation and natural resource management.
  • Demonstrate ability to think creatively and solve problems effectively.
  • Must possess a strong drive for achieving results and demonstrate ability to work both independently and as a member of team; to work with a diverse range of stakeholders and communities; and to effectively coordinate, lead and motivate a multidisciplinary staff.
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively communities in remote areas, with diverse cultural and economic background.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication (English and Kiswahili).
  • Good presentation skills.
  • Computer literacy especially in Microsoft, Word, Excel, Power Point and E-mail.
